Jane's Challenge: Subtext
'Write a short piece, no more than 1 A4 side, (part of the
purpose of this challenge being to see how much can be said with a few words as
possible ) in which there is a subtext of your choice, which carries a
strong emotional content. For instance, divorce, jealousy, illness, love, hate,
death/bereavement, failure. This subject however, MUST NOT BE MENTIONED
EXPLICITLY in the piece, in fact the protagonists must talk about another
subject altogether i.e. gardening, a planned or taken holiday, clothes, the
house, etc. The idea is to hint at or suggest the hidden subtext by the power
and condensed quality of your writing. If you are writing a play scene, or a
piece of prose, then the stage directions or description can say a lot. Choose
any form you like play, prose or poetry and please submit to me at esca.francis@hotmail.com
by the 5th of August.'
