Val’s "Time" challenge for DWs, set Thursday 15th October 2009-10-15

Unfortunately Val now has other commitments on Thursday nights, so having come up with the idea/theme for the challenge, she is now unable to set it or to judge it.
However, rather than waste a good idea, Val has very kindly agreed that we carry on with this specific challenge without her.
So, upon Stuart’s suggestion, as my first act as new committee member, I have offered to run the challenge this time.
Here is the challenge, and we have 5 weeks to work on it.

Time:

Write either a prose piece of up to a maximum of 1,500 words, or a poem set in a specific time.
This can be in any time period of either recent or distant history, but not the future.
Using whatever device/technique/referencing you wish, create a sense of that time period without referring to the date in any way, i.e. no reference to year, decade, century, millennium.
It is up to you to decide whether this is comic, fact based, invented, nostalgic etc, and I would love to have a mix of everything for the night.
The deadline for pieces to be sent to me will be Friday 20th November (you could give them to me in person at the Anthology Launch if you wish)
NB: It would also be great if you could send me some as soon as possible so that I do not have 20 to read in a short space of time.
Similarly, as I work full time and am busy with extra curricular things like the Laureate Squad and Orange Street, please stick to the word count as, whilst I am perfectly happy to do my bit for DWs, I will not have infinite time to read these pieces. Alternatively, feel free to all write poetry or very short fiction!!!
At the moment I think I will either pick a winner for poetry and a winner for prose, or an overall winner and a winner for something specific - as yet undecided, but being an instinctive chap, I reserve the right to change my mind at any time, so I will keep you posted nearer the time
That aside, DW challenges have always been great fun and very well supported, so I look forward to all our creations and am sure that when we share them at our
Thursday 3rd December meeting, we will have an entertaining time.

All the best, and happy scribbling/tapping. Gary.                                                 Back to Diary
